Dear Parent or Caregiver:
Your student has recently been enrolled in a new English Language Arts program called Expert 21. Expert 21 is a comprehensive ELA curriculum that prepares students for the literacy demands of the 21st century through a combination of explicit instruction, inquiry based learning, relevant literature and informational texts, real-world writing and projects, as well as supportive technology.
More information about Expert 21 can be found at http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/english-language-arts-program/expert-21/index.htm
When enrolled in Expert 21, your student will begin by taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) assessment. This quick test will result in a Lexile assignment. A Lexile is a “valuable piece of information about either an individual’s reading ability or the difficulty of a text, like a book or magazine article” (www.lexile.com). Parents, teachers and students can use Lexiles to make informed decisions about in-classroom and at-home reading. Your student’s SRI testing window is: __________________________. Your student should know his/her Lexile score immediately following a test. To help make reading growth throughout the year, students should choose books within their appropriate reading range. In other words, students should choose independent reading books with a Lexile that is between100 points below and 50 points above their own Lexile measurement.
At www.lexile.com, a parent or student can quickly determine the Lexile of most any book as well as get a list of books appropriate for the student based on their grade, interests, and Lexile.
Use the tips on the back of this letter to access www.lexile.com and learn more about the Lexile Framework and how you can support reading in the home through better awareness of your child’s Lexile.
In addition to the SRI assessment, each student will also have access to Expert Space, an online learning environment that features reading scaffolds to make texts accessible to all students. This companion website includes reading passages from their Expert 21 student edition text, other leveled articles related to their textbook themes, relevant web links, and tools to help extend learning and make cross-curricular connections. You and your student may access Expert Space from school or home to support their Expert 21 classroom learning goals. Go to www.scholastic.com/expert21/student. Students will need to know their school zip code (56301) to access this site. Students will also be given a username and password to for this site during the first few weeks of school.
Thank you for your time and interest in your student’s literacy development!
Sincerely,
Mrs. K
