September 2011:
9/6: We have 6 minute classes with the freshmen. Welcome!
9/7: Seating charts. Names. Procedures. "What IS Expert 21?"
9/8: Names. Routines. Community building activity.
9/9: The Arc of Inquiry: What is that? Explore student work books.
9/12: Today we finished up our scavenger hunt and took the SRI test which will determine the different reading levels in the class (lexiles).
9/13: We began our textbook and began thinking about college and careers.
9/14: Today's lesson was on context clues, summarizing, and vocabulary for our first story
9/15: Began "Playing the Game" by Walter Dean Meyers
9/16: Finished the story. Began assignment of creating a web site for the Baldwin Basketball team.
9/19: Today we began our rough drafts of the players in "Playing the Game." Began our weebly.
9/20: We focused on the quote page rough draft. Continued weeblys.
9/21: Final touches on weeblys. Begin a new reading tomorrow.
9/22: Finish weebly at home if you're not done. Began front loading for our new informative text.
9/23: We reviewed the vocab. Read true stories of four people and their struggles to get into college.
9/26: Today we studied infographics.
9/27: We reviewed vocab words. We began to analyze data (which career/education level/salary)
9/28: Finished up in the computer lab
9:29: Began to front load for a new instructional text.
9/30: Reviewed prefix/suffix. Began a "how to" instructional text
OCTOBER:
10/3: Today we focused on Point of View i.e. first/third person. To practice this knowledge we rewrote a simple fairy tale in first person.
10/4: We continued our story into final draft form. A
10/5: We began to read the short story "My People"
10/6: Focused on Main idea today.
10:7: Finished story "My People" focused on affixes
10/10: We finished up "My People" and worked on main idea.
10/11: We looked at the different types of college essays people can write.
10/12-14: We began narrowing our own topic for our personal narrative
10/17: FINAL VOCAB TEST Oct. 28. We played Bingo to review! We had some time to write our personal narrative as well. Received grading rubric.
10/18: Today we finished up our personal narrative. Had Mrs. K check it and headed to the lab to type up a copy.
10/19: Completed typing our rough draft.
10/24: Continued work on essay
10/25: Today played SLAP! a vocab game to prepare for the test on Friday. Continued work on our essays. ESSAY DUE Thursday!
10/26: Introduced FINAL PROJECT! You will be conducting an interview speech with a fellow adult. The interview should be conducted this weekend. We finished up in the comp. lab. Essay due tomorrow!
10/27: Created some interview questions
10/28: Took vocab. test. Will grade as a class on Monday! INTERVIEW THIS WEEKEND!
10/31: Students should have conducted an interview. We are going to write our intro/conclusion today--due tomorrow.
11/1: Read indepentdently "On the Cutting Edge" and did the worksheet.
11/2: Continued working on speech. Intro/conclusion due today. Began working on the body.
11/7-8: Practice and present speeches!
11/9: Begin Workshop 2 Focusing on technology.
11/10-11: Read our first short story and focus on conflict (internal vs. external)
11/14-11/18: Continue work on "The Last Dog" and discuss conflict. Also continue work on new vocab.
11/21: Finish up the story "The Last Dog." Take a quiz on conflict. Conflict drawing assignment.
11/22: Read "Exposed to the Max." This is a magazine articles on the dangers of personal info on the internet.
11/23: Begin social networking dos and don'ts assignment.
11/28: Continue the magazine article Exposed to the Max on page 107. Begin social networking dos and don'ts assignment.
11/29-11/30: Work on power point assignment in computer lab. Worth 20 points (and a chance of extra credit!).
12/5-12/6: We begin by seeing any social media presentations (for extra credit!). We will discuss the first three readings of WS 2: similarities and differences. TUESDAY is our first progress test (15 points). This test will be on the first three readings.
12/7-12/9: We continue with Technology as our focus and begin the readings of the second inquiry "Technology to the Rescue."
12/12-12/16: Today we are going to review our story "Welcome to the Future." Then we'll have some time to finish up our synonyms/antonyms worksheet. Tuesday we will start a new nonfiction piece about teamwork. Wednesday we will put teamwork to use and see how we do! Thursday and Friday of the week we will be taking NWEA tests (MAP) to see our yearly progress.
12/19-12/22: This week we finish up all the readings of Workshop 2. We are going to continue work on our final project (a new invention: concept). By the end of the week this project will be presented and voted on (creativity/usefulness). Also this week, VOCAB TEST on Thursday. Practice by using flashcards on: www.quizlet.com/user/skoskin1
1/3-1/6: This week we will finish and present our invention projects. Monday we will complete a lesson on visual design. Tuesday through Friday we will begin our final essay on future technology (prewriting and rough drafts)
1/9-1/13:
This week we will work common essay grammar errors. The rest of the time we will focus on writing our problem-solution essay. This essay will be due on Friday.
